Per chi non sapesse cosa sono i Phrasal Verbs, vi invito, pima, a leggere questo articolo: Phrasal Verb lesson 1 .

Vediamo alcuni esempi di phrasal verbs con il verbo “Take” :

• Take up = start a new hobby or a new activity ( iniziare un’attività).

Ex: He took up woodworking after inheriting his grandfather’s tools. = Si è dato alla falegnameria dopo aver ereditato l’attrezzatura del nonno.

• Take after = resemble in character or apperance (assomigliare a)

Ex: Many people say that Marta takes after her father = Molte persone dicono che Marta assomiglia al padre.

• Take in = to understand (capire )

Ex: He was speaking too fast, it was hard to take in everything he said = Lui stava parlando troppo velocemente, è stato difficile capire tutto quello che ha detto.

• Take off = to rise into the air or to lose weight (decollare o perdere peso)

Ex:  The plane will take off for New York at 09.35am. = L’aereo decollerà per NY alle 9.35.

Ex : Marco’s doctor told him he needed to take off weight : Il dottore di Marco gli ha detto che aveva bisogno di perdere peso.

• Take down = make a written note (annotare )

Ex: The policeman took down his name and address and told him not to leave town = Il poliziotto ha preso nota delle sue generalità e gli ha intimato di non lasciare la città.

• Take back = return something, retract something ( riprendere indietro qualcosa o ritirare indietro )

Ex: I wish I could take back what I said in anger. = Vorrei poter ritirare quanto ho detto nell’impeto di rabbia.

• Take over = get control of something (prendere il controllo, sostituire )

Ex: Take over the meeting for me, I’ll be back in a moment. = Sostituiscimi alla riunione, tornerò subito!

• Take on = to hire someone or accept something ( assumere o accettare un incarico)

Ex: Taking on the directorship was his first mistake = Accettare la direzione è stato il suo primo errore.

Sapete cosa significa :  Behind the eight ball?

Questa espressione allude al gioco del biliardo e rappresenta la quasi impossibilità  di tirare quando il pallino (bianco) si trova dietro la palla 8 (nera). Infatti se traducessimo letteralmente  behind the eight ball il significato sarebbe  “dietro la palla otto”  ma in realtà è un’espressione che si usa per descrivere una situazione molto difficile.

Example:

I termini “all ready” ed “already” si pronunciano allo stesso modo e a volte vengono confusi, quindi per evitare errori quando si scrivono bisogna tener bene in mente che hanno due significati completamente diversi.

All ready

Il termine all ready significa tutto pronto o completamente pronto. 

Example: 

We were all ready to leave = Eravamo tutti pronti per uscire. 

Already

Il termine already invece significa già.

Examples: 

She has already graduated = Lei si è già laureata. 

We’ve already had breakfast = Noi abbiamo già fatto colazione.

Sapete cosa significa :  Tie the knot?

Se lo traducessimo letteralmente sarebbe  “fare un nodo” ma in realtà è un’espressione che si usa per dire che due persone che si sposano !!!

Example:

Marco and Giulia have finally tied the knot = Marci e Giulia si sono finalmente sposati!

My best friend is tying the knot next week = La mia migliore amica si sposerà la prossima settimana!

Sapete cosa significa :  Let the cat out of the bag?

Letteralmente si traduce come “fare uscire il gatto dalla borsa” ma in realtà significa “farsi scappare un segreto di bocca“!

Example:

I was trying to organise a surprise party for my mum’s birthday but my sister let the cat out of the bag and ruined all. = Stavo cercando   organizzare una festa a sorpresa per il compleanno di mia madre, ma mia sorella se l’è fatto scappare e ha rovinato tutto.
