Valentine’s Day : phrasal verbs, idioms and sayings !!!

Phrasal verbs:

  • ask out = ask somebody out on a date with you (chiedere di uscire insieme)

Example:

He is too scared to ask her out. = Lui è troppo spaventato per chiederle di uscire con lui.

  • cuddle up = to hold close in an affectionate way. (coccolarsi)

Example:

We cuddled up while we watched television = Ci siamo coccolati mentre guardavamo la TV.

  • fall for – to become very attracted to someone, or fall in love with him (innamorarsi)

Example:

She fell for him as soon as she saw him. = Lei si è innamorata di lui non appena l’ha visto.

  • get together = to start a romantic relationship (fidanzarsi)

Example:

They got together in 2001 when they were working in Paris. = Si sono fidanzati nel 2001 quando stavano lavorando a Parigi.

  • go out  together  = means to have a romantic relationship with someone(frequentarsi)

Example:

They have been going out together for six months. = Loro stanno frequentando da sei mesi.

  • live for = if you live for somebody they are the most important thing in your life. (vivo per lui o lei)

Example:

Marcus lives for his wife: he will do anything for her. = Marcus vive per sua moglie, farebbe qualsiasi cosa per lei.

  • move in together = start living with someone. (andare a convivere)

Example:

We’re moving in together in June. = Andremo a convivere  in Giugno.

  •  pour out = to tell somebody everything about how you are feeling. ( aprire il proprio cuore, confidarsi )

Example:

She poured out her feelings and told him how much she loved him. = Lei gli ha aperto il suo cuore e gli ha detto quanto l’amasse.

 

Idioms:

  • a heart-to-heart talk = is a completely open and honest private discussion between two people. (chiacchierata a cuore aperto)

Example:

We had a heart-to-heart talk last night to try and work out our problems.= La scorsa notte abbiamo avuto una chiacchierata a cuore aperto e abbiamo cercato di risolvere i nostri problemi.

  • fall head over heels in love =  to fall in love with somebody very suddenly, and with great intensity. (perdere la testa per qualcuno)

Example:

I met my husband at university and fell head over heels in love with him on our first date. = Ho incontrato mio marito all’università e ho perso la testa per lui al nostro primo appuntamento.

  • lovebirds = if two people are clearly very much in love with each other they are often called ‘the lovebirds’. (piccioncini)

Example:

Look at those lovebirds, cuddeling up on the park bench = Guarda quei piccioncini che si fanno le coccole sulla panchina del parco.

  • crazy about somebody = to be infatuated for somebody (essere pazzamente innamorati di qualcuno)

Example:

I’m crazy about you! = Sono pazzamente innamorato di te.

  • a match made in heaven = a perfect combination of two people ( coppia perfetta )

Example:

We are a match made in heaven = Noi siamo una coppia perfetta.

  • love at first sight = to instantly fall in love with someone (innamorarsi a prima vista)

Example:

It was love at first sight = è stato amore a prima vista!
